1966 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350H
Back in 1965, the Shelby GT350 Mustang was first introduced, and it became an instant sensation on and off the track. Fast forward to September of that same year, Hertz and Peyton Cramer, Shelby American General Manager, collaborated on a 1966 Shelby GT350H as a rental car to attract potential buyers. Hertz Sports Car Club members were able to rent one for $17 a day and .17 cents a mile. Only 1,001 of these cars were produced, and only 800 were Raven Black with gold striping. We are excited to offer this stunning and rare 1966 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350H.
The 289ci engine under the hood was rebuilt to 306hp specifications and all of the correct Shelby components were reinstalled. The engine wears Ford Blue paint along with a proper Shelby-spec high-rise intake and Autolite 4-barrel carburetor. Reproduction hoses, clamps and a new wiring harness were installed. Underneath is the standard Hertz-issued C4 3-speed automatic transmission, as well as a 9” rear.
Power assisted features abound, including windows, seats, steering, and brakes. Keyless entry and push button start with rolling code encryption enhance security. The Revology-designed full-length console features genuine Flat Cut Walnut trim and two cupholders, and the premium bucket seats are trimmed in Nappa leather. LED instrument and interior lighting enhances visibility and convenience at night.
Of course, Shelby also benefited from their legendary partnership with Hertz. The immense popularity of the Rent-A-Racer program bolstered demand for the 1966 Shelby Mustang GT350, as interested consumers were effectively offered the chance at an “unsupervised” test drive of sorts. One could put the GT350-H through its paces and were able to experience its capabilities firsthand.
Renting a Shelby GT350H was extremely popular among racing enthusiasts. Many would take it to the drag strip for a weekend of fun, but it would be returned in need of repairs. Others would remove the engine and stuff it inside their personal cars as to not damage the body of the rental. Before return, the high-performance engine was stuffed back inside the Hertz Shelby and returned.
