1977 Pontiac LeMans CAN AM
The Pontiac Can Am is a midsize muscle car built by Pontiac and based on the Pontiac LeMans and the Pontiac Grand Am. The Can Am was a special edition option package and was only available in 1977. It was named for the Can Am racing series, continuing the race theme used for the Pontiac Grand Prix, LeMans and Trans Am.
Named after the iconic Canadian-American (Can-Am) racing series, the Can Am was based on the LeMans Sport Coupe. On top of the latter’s louvered quarter windows, the Can Am also got the Trans Am’s shaker hood scoop plus a ducktail rear spoiler sourced from the Grand Am All-American show car.
The Can Am was one of the final developments of the fourth-generation Le Mans. A brand new car in 1973, the Le Mans used a new platform that still carried the title of A-body. Wheelbase remained unchanged at 112 inches for gen four, and many of the same engine options remained, as well. The exciting new 1977 Pontiac LeMans CAN AM was available with power 400ci W72 V8 is equipped with a four-barrel carburetor and was factory rated at 200 horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque.
The cabin features seating surfaces trimmed in Firethorn Red (71R1) vinyl upholstery with matching door panels and carpeting. Amenities include front shoulder belts, an AM/FM radio, and front and rear floor mats. A three-spoke Sport steering wheel fronts instrumentation consisting of a 100-mph speedometer, a 6k-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary gauges.
Pontiac was possibly the only brand to keep the distinctly American idea of a GM muscle car alive through the oil crisis of the1970s. When everyone else was doing the ugly compact luxury car trend, Pontiac was still putting out models like the Firebird and GTO. These vehicles were still just as beautiful as in the 1960s and still boasted style despite increasing safety regulations. One such model that kept the Pontiac brand in the performance car business was the Pontiac LeMans. While this car is one of those great American muscle cars, this is far from an ordinary Le Mans. Instead, this is a Can-Am Sports Coupe model, making it a relatively rare option while also providing more style and performance.
