1972 Chevrolet Corvette Race Car 5-Speed
The Chevrolet Corvette is a sports car that was produced from 1967 until 1982 by Chevrolet for the 1968 to 1982 model years. Engines and chassis components were mostly carried over from the previous generation, but the body and interior were new.
It’s the age-old question that Corvette builders face each time they find a project car that’s in less-than-original condition: Do you want to restore it, or build it into something else?
This 1972 Chevrolet Corvette was modified as a race car around four decades ago and has since campaigned in various SCCA and CASC events, reportedly including races at Watkins Glen, Lime Rock Park, Willow Springs, and Mosport Park International Raceway. Power comes from a 350ci V8 crate engine paired with a Tremec TKO five-speed manual transmission, and the car is finished in orange with black accents. Features include a full roll cage with door bars.
American Racing Torq Thrust wheels are wrapped in Hoosier and Goodyear slicks in the front and rear respectively. Braking is through four-wheel discs with Wilwood monoblock calipers, a Wilwood master cylinder, and two-piece front rotors. The rear suspension is overhauled, and the car is equipped with Bilstein and PRO shocks, Allstar Performance rear control arms, a 3/4” sway bar, and a GM power steering box.
The stripped cabin houses a black fabric Kirkey fixed-back bucket seat with Simpson multi-point harnesses. Additional equipment includes a full roll cage with door bars, a window net, fire suppression system, carbon fiber transmission tunnel, a Racequip shifter boot, and an engine-turned driver’s door panel. An MSD ignition box and fire bottle are housed in the passenger-side footwell. A three-spoke steering wheel sits ahead of a custom dashboard housing a 9k-rpm VDO tachometer, auxiliary gauges, and a shift light mounted atop the dash.
This Chevrolet Corvette Race Car is an eminently usable example of the iconic American classic, which has been well maintained.
