1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SE Cabriolet
Mercedes-Benz’s elegant Paul Bracq-designed W111 made its debut in 1959 and was produced in many variations through 1971. Among the most desirable variations were the two-door models, the 280 SE Cabriolet and Coupe, which in the great tradition of German craftsmanship, were virtually hand-built automobiles. The acres of wood trim throughout the interior were all genuine solid hardwood, accented by the gentle use of brightwork; the leather upholstery was thick and comfortable; and both the ride quality and handling were (and continue to be) superb.
This 1969 Mercedes -Benz 280SE cabriolet is finished in red over Cognac leather. Power is provided by a fuel-injected 2.8-liter inline-six paired with a four-speed automatic transmission, and the car is equipped with a Kuhlmeister air conditioning system, power windows, power steering, a Becker Europa radio, and a power antenna.
Steel 14” wheels wear color-matched covers and are mounted with Hankook narrow-whitewall tires. The car is fitted with power steering.
The interior was reupholstered in Cognac leather, and additional work included recovering the door panels as well as installing matching carpeting, a headliner, and windlace. Amenities include power windows, Coco mats, and a Becker Europa radio with a power antenna. VDO instrumentation includes a 7k-rpm tachometer and a 140-mph speedometer with a five-digit odometer.
These Mercedes-Benz 280SE Cabriolet rapidly became favorites of international socialites and celebrities, and they were frequently seen cruising in all of the world’s most posh destinations. Just less than 1,400 280SE Cabriolets were assembled from 1968-1971. Their rarity, performance, handling, craftsmanship are all blended perfectly into a design that has become iconic. It is no wonder why the 280SE has become one of the most recognized classic Mercedes-Benz models sought-after by collectors today.
