1967 Pontiac GTO Convertible
There isnt much thats cooler than a 1967 Pontiac GTO. Except maybe a 1967 GTO Convertible!
Of the 81,722 GTOs built in 1967, only 1,591 were built as convertibles with the 400 HO engine; this beautiful Vendoro Green Poly example with a white interior is one of those rare machines. It is also the recipient of an extensive body-off-frame restoration and has an impressive award pedigree to back up its quality.
Pontiac GTO styling carried over for 1967, but there were a number of mechanical changes. General Motors issued a new corporate edict banning multiple carb set-ups for all cars save the Chevy Corvette. This meant the raucous 389 Tri-Power that had proven so popular in the GTO was a thing of the past. In an effort to appease the performance faithful, Pontiac increased displacement on the GTO engine to 400 cubic inches. The GTO came with a standard high-output 400 cube V8 fed by a new Quadrajet four barrel rated at 360 horsepower, but two other engines were available for the 1967 model year.
Some aspects of design change notably for the worse: The gorgeous dashboards of the 1950s, filled with brightwork and dials and thoughtful (if not quite yet ergonomics) were replaced with a more boring and simple interiors. Blame a combination of safety regulations and a lack of imagination.
Finished from the factory in Venduro Green Poly and white soft top. What a beautiful color combination.
With all marketing efforts concentrated into earning the younger peoples’ attention, the GTO was also featured in movie, transforming it into a legendary vehicle.
After the GTO’s release, the other carmakers started to design their own models for even more attractive prices: the Oldsmobile and the Plymouth were the main competitors.
Certainly if the idea of a big American convertible appeals, then something like this with a bit of ‘attitude’ under the bonnet would have to be worth a look.
