1963 Chevrolet Impala SS 327 Convertible
The Chevrolet Impala is a full-sized car built by Chevrolet for model years 1958 to 1985, 1994 to 1996, and 2000 to 2020. The Impala was Chevrolet’s popular flagship passenger car and was among the better-selling American-made automobiles in the United States.
This drop-top 1963 Chevrolet Impala comes equipped with the factory Super Sport package that helped fuel explosive growth in Impala production. The SS package could be ordered as the Regular Production Option Z03 and was an appearance package limited to hardtop and convertible models, available to be ordered with any engine option for the Impala series. The 1963 Impala was a third-generation model for the nameplate, built on the Chevrolet B platform, which would end up with the distinction of generating the highest production numbers of any car platform in the history of General Motors. Minor but effective styling changes to the Impala helped usher in the debut of the SS package in 1961.
The detailed engine bay showcases a rebuilt 327 CI V-8 engine and two-speed Powerglide automatic transmission. Turbo-Fire small-block engines were factory-equipped with a 4-barrel carburetor and dual exhaust for maximum performance and a more favorable weight-to-output ratio than their big-block brothers. Convertibles rolled off the line with heavy-duty coil springs for improved handling and that jet-smooth ride. Power steering and power brakes team up here for near-effortless road control.
The cabin features bucket seats trimmed in blue vinyl, along with a matching rear bench, carpeting, and door panels. Equipment includes a center console, a floor-mounted shifter, an AM/FM radio, rubber floor mats, and an under-dash tissue holder. The two-spoke steering wheel is mounted on a tilt column and frames an optional 6k-rpm tachometer, a horizontal 120-mph speedometer, an analog clock, and a fuel gauge.
This is why, when the moment came, the GM brand picked the Impala to celebrate one super-important achievement. It happened in 1963 when the company built its 50 millionth car, and as you can guess already, the model picked to mark this milestone was an Impala SS.
