1960 Chrysler Windsor
The Chrysler Windsor is a full-size car which was built by Chrysler from 1939 through to the 1960s. The final Chrysler Windsor sold in the United States was produced in 1961, but production in Canada continued until 1966. The Canadian 1961 to 1966 Windsor model was for all intents and purposes the equivalent of the Chrysler Newport in the United States.
The Windsor was almost identical to the more luxurious Chrysler New Yorker in terms of size, interior and standard features except that it was only available with the Chrysler Straight Six that originally started the company in 1925, which offered customers a luxurious car with a more modest and economic engine. As the years progressed and technology and manufacturing costs improved, the Windsor offered items that were initially optional as standard equipment while maintaining a market position lower in the Chrysler product hierarchy.
Under the aforementioned hood of this 1960 Chrysler Windsor in a clean fully restored and freshly painted engine bay is a 440ci engine is built with 9.5 compression to run on pump gas. It has a Chrysler 509 hydraulic cam, factory 300-J long rams and cast-iron headers. It’s equipped with 727 TorqueFlite transmission and 2500 stall converter which was adapted to the original push-buttons. This also enhanced performance and the drivability, including when desired full-manual-shift capability. No runs, no drips or errors on this engine.
Slip inside and immediately you are greeted with various surfaces, expensive coverings, and a dash to die for. Door panels use red vinyl with 60’s pattern cloth inserts dual bench seats, front and rear, use red vinyl bolsters and cloth inserts complete with a highlighting metal thread woven throughout. Some stitching has separated at the seam of the vinyl and cloth. Futuristic styling with push button transmission, temp and fan controls surround a semicircular dash with a metal bowl with more controls on layers of semicircle and a crescent speedometer. A large original wheel fronts the dash, red carpeting floods the floors, and the headliner floats above.
A beautiful ode to the rocket styling of this midcentury modern masterpiece. You will truly have a smile on your face as you pull away from your butterfly roof contemporary carport and become the envy of your friend’s fondue Soiree. Interior styling and fins to beat the band is only the beginning of this example of suburban success.
