1953 Studebaker Commander Regal Starlight Coupe
This is the Raymond Loewy design firm styled Starliner coupe, a car that was bold and new and looked ahead to the future. It is much, much lower than it’s competitors of the era – Studebaker beat Pontiac to the Longer Lower Wider approach by 6 or 7 years!
Legendary industrial designer Raymond Loewy often gets the credit for the svelte lines of Studebaker’s landmark coupe, with the car sometimes called the Loewy coupe. But it was Robert Bourke, a designer at Loewy’s studio, who penned the low, lean styling for what originally was to be a Studebaker show car.
This great classic car is equipped as follows. The 259ci Studebaker V8 is paired with a 3-speed automatic transmission. Equipment includes an Edelbrock air cleaner and a 12-volt electrical system.
The interior is trimmed in red vinyl with black carpets, a white headliner, and matching door panels. Seat belts are equipped front and rear. Instruments housed in the engine-turned dash panel include a 160-mph speedometer and an ammeter as well as gauges for oil pressure, fuel level, and water temperature.
This is a wonderful and highly appealing example of the revolutionary Commander Regal Starlight Coupe.
Compare this to everything else on the road in 1953, – only the Corvette, the Kaiser-Darrin and custom built European cars could match it for styling!
