1949 Studebaker Champion Starlight Coupe
The Starlight coupe is a unique 2-door body style that was offered by Studebaker Corporation of South Bend, Indiana (United States) from 1947 to 1955 on its Champion and Commander model series. It was designed by Virgil Exner, formerly of Raymond Loewy Associates.
This 1949 Studebaker Champion Starlight Coupe is finished green over a tan interior and is powered by a 169ci inline-six mated with a three-speed manual transmission. Equipment includes chrome trim, polished hubcaps, whitewall tires, front and rear bench seats, rear window shades, and an AM radio.
The avant-garde styling of the Studebaker Starlight Coupe was controversial right from the start. The unique four-piece wraparound rear window looked like a backward windshield, and standup comedians labeled it the car for people who don’t know whether they’re coming or going.
