Distinguished from the 500 sedan by the “K” for Kompressor (German for supercharger), only fitted to these performance cars, it succeeded the Mercedes-Benz 380 introduced just the previous year. It offered both a larger, more powerful engine and more opulent coachwork to meet customers’ demands for greater luxury and performance.
The Mercedes-Benz 500K Special Roadster was established on the chassis of the W 29 model series. It was produced a year after the Mercedes-Benz 380. The 500K used a similar autonomous suspension as on the Mercedes 380, with a dual wishbone front axle, double-joint swing axle at the rear, and different wheel positions, compression springs, and brakes yet the Mercedes 500k offered a bigger and more powerful engine than its predecessor.
