1930 Ford Model A Deluxe Coupe
The Ford Model A (also colloquially called the A-Model Ford or the A, and A-bone among hot rodders and customizers) was the Ford Motor Company’s second market success, replacing the venerable Model T which had been produced for 18 years. It was first produced on October 20, 1927, but not introduced until December 2. This new Model A (a previous model had used the name in 1903–04) was designated a 1928 model and was available in four standard colors. The vehicle was also sold in Europe, but was replaced by locally built cars such as the Ford Model Y.
The Model A, in all of the variants available in its four-year production span–which are grouped by aficionados into early (1928-’29) and late (1930-’31) cars–remains one of the most popular antique automobiles. This 1930 Ford Model A Deluxe Coupe is a great example of the iconic Model A’s.
This vintage 1930 Ford Model A Deluxe Coupe is powered by Ford’s 201ci L-head four 4-cylinder engine that has been completely rebuilt. It purrs nicely (as only a flathead can) and pushes out 40 horsepower. A 4-speed manual unsynchronized gearbox with floor shift backs the powerplant.
The cabin is trimmed in cloth upholstery with matching door panels, and as well as wood accents on the dash and doors. Modifications include a 4-speed transmission from a later-model Ford pickup, as well as an F100 steering box.
In the late 1920s and early 1930s, the Ford Model A was one of the most publicized and best-selling cars in America. It was sporty, attractive, well-built, and smooth-running compared to the Model T, which it replaced in the 1928 model year. Thousands of people were eager to see for themselves that “Henry’s made a lady out of Lizzie,” and they stormed Ford showrooms when the Model A debuted on December 2, 1927.
